Romantic and Historic Hotel In Pennsylvania -  Historic City Grand Hotel

History in Williamsport at the City Grand Hotel

Looking for a Romantic, historic hotel stay in Pennsylvania should be an easy task right?  Pennsylvania IS historic and has two cities, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh as well as many small towns speckled all over the place.  I am here to help you find some romantic getaways for your next anniversary, birthday or just plain getaway stays.

Where to find a historic and grand hotel for a couples weekend?
With the holidays just having passed, my husband and I decided a nice gift for one another would be do a small getaway in a new hotel.  Leaving the kids home for a little adult time is not just desired but often required.  We began our search for a unique hotel that had some charm and wasn't the typical Holiday Inn or Comfort Inn Suites.   We ended up finding the City Grand Hotel.

The Historic City Grand Hotel in Williamsport
The Historic City Grand Hotel had availability, was reasonably priced and had unique themed rooms based on different themes from Williamsport history.  We ended up staying in the Band Room for the separate seating area and vault that is a door to the shower.  On the walls were many historic photographs of bands of yester year.  It was really interesting to momentarily step back into time to remember a little bit what life may have been life back in the day in the city of Williamsport located in Northeast Pennsylvania.
This historic hotel was full of charm, great pictures and cool decor.
Some other rooms available are:
  • The Little League Room
  • The Lumber Room
  • The Mayors Suite
  • The Council Room
  • The Engine Room
  • The American Red Cross Room
  • And more rooms not mentioned
Michael Ross, is the Founder of Williamsport located in Lycoming County.  At the conclusion of his seven-year indenture with Samuel Wallis in 1779, Ross received 109 acres from the large landowner having left him with a good impression.  You can find more history of the hotel here.
We really enjoyed the keyless entry and self check in the City Grand Hotel offered.  Although there is no front desk, there is a hang out room on the third floor, with ice, vending machine, microwave and additional cups and coffee maker.  It felt a lot like an Airbnb and I am very surprised they do not actually have any of their unique rooms listed on Airbnb's directory.  Maybe one day.

There is a restaurant call the Newsroom at the hotel, but it was closed during our stay.

Amenities at the City Grand Hotel

  • Coffee Machines
  • Ice Maker
  • Microwave
  • Elevator
  • Keyless Entry
  • Uniquely themed rooms
  • Historic Photographs
  • Walking distance to restaurants, hotels and bars
  • Near River walk (we did a 2.5 mile run and it was beautiful)
  • Restaurant
  • Small fitness center
  • Clean Rooms
  • Historic architecture

What is an Off Grid Cabin?

10/11/2022

What is an off grid cabin?  People like to throw around a lot of terms when it comes to camping, glamping, solar, grids and cabins.  But what exactly does it mean when we say Deer Path and Coyote Run are off grid camping cabins?  Off grid camping can mean many things.  But we will explore the true off grid definitions in regard to camping and glamping in cabins below.

Life has gotten really busy for a lot of people living in our society.  It seems everything is fast paced and digitalized.  How many websites require a login and password just to access information!?  It has gotten really stressful for most adults.  Getting a break or going on a getaway is more important now than ever.  50 years ago, it was a given that going on vacation was phoneless, tabletless and laptopless.   Not the case anymore for most adults.  When traveling the minimum of a smart phone is brought along.  The smart phone is your directions, check in (qr code) and payment.  With so much digital technology ruling our lives "disconnecting" and unplugging literally means to unplug and stay away from these very important devices that all but rule our waking moments.  Unplugging is easier than ever when you go off grid.  It is a literal disconnect from the grid.

What is 'The Grid"?
By definition the grid is - In broad terms, “the grid” refers to our electricity infrastructure. That includes the generators that produce power, along with the various poles, wires, and transformers that electricity flows through as it makes its way to the end user.

So essentially to go off grid, you are disconnecting from the electrical grid.  The massive system that brings power to homes that charges our lights, phones, T.V's and other household devices.

Are Off Grid Camping Cabins Powered at all?
Yes and no.  Our off grid camping cabins do have minimal power which provided directly from the SUN!  We know that going off grid sounds cool, but having NO POWER may not be 100 percent practical all of the time.  Using solar power only, the cabins are not connecting to ANY of the electrical infrastructure provided to most traditional homes.  Using our solar panels we are able to capture sun power and convert it using the inverter.  This makes the power usable to charge devices, watch TV and have light.

Traditional camping is often off grid with power sources being battery powered and portable.

Off Grid Getaways.  Are they any fun?
Personally, I would say YES!  At our cabins we get many solar travelers and couples looking to unplug, and recharge themselves.  The best way to do this is to go off grid.  Not only are our cabins powered by solar only, they are not connected to any water and sewage which makes them a step above the traditional off grid definition.
Picture
On top of having solar power in our off grid cabins we offer a portable generator.  This is a great alternative when sunny days are limited or additional power is needed.  Additional power could be a cpap machine or fan.  Thee jackery batteries are great for travel and camping.  They also can be powered with a solar panel.
